Sri Lanka has been through enormous difficulties in recent years β the economic crisis, the power cuts, the fuel shortages. I lived through all of it. It taught me resilience in a way that I do not think could be learned any other way. This country is recovering, slowly and stubbornly, and I am proud to be earning foreign currency that circulates in the local economy.
Colombo is a beautiful, chaotic, sea-scented city. I love the beach at Mount Lavinia in the evening, rice and curry on a banana leaf, and the thunderstorms that arrive in monsoon season with absolutely no warning. I play badminton, I read science fiction, and I am slowly learning to drive (badly).
